Began a 5cm cut on the north end of the trench.  After doing meters 51S160E and 52S160E, it became apparent that a soil change had occured.  It was then decided to stop the cut and clean the entire trench in order to look at the soil for the whole trench (the baulk walls were also straightened).  After this cleaning, it was evident that the soil had definately changed and a new locus had been reached.

PM

2 separate loci were created to accomodate the new situation.  Locus 2 covers 5 of the 6 meters in the trench, excluding meter 52S161E and includes the new soil type.  The soil type is a light olive gray, sometimes a little yellowish, with white particulatates and is more compacted than the previous soil type in locus 1.  Meter 52S161E and half of meter 53S161E were excluded because of the root system that completely dominates

this area.  This excluded area was labelled Locus 3 and will be discussed further below.  The following coordinates and depths were taken for Locus 2:

Coordinates (m)               Depth (cm)

1. 51.43S 161.47E           55

2. 51.87S 161.75E           45

3. 51.60S 160.72E           61

4. 52.70S 160.42E           49

5. 53.48S 160.41E           47.5

6. 53.56S 160.95E           49

7. 53.48S 161.45E           45

Locus 3 is a slope beginning at the western edge of 52S161E and rising sharply eastward to 52S162E.  The roots are very large and dense and interspersed with terracotta.  The following coordinates and depths were taken for Locus 3:

Coordinates (m)               Depth (cm)

1. 53.47S 161.64E           35

2. 53.10S 161.36E           33

3. 52.17S 161.42E           39

For the time being, Locus 2 will be excavated, and once the depth of it has exceeded the root system, Locus 3 eill be excavated.

Today Locus 1 produced 1/3 a latte box of bulk pottery and Locus 2 produced 13 pieces of bulk pottery.  A 1/4 cassette of terracotta and no special finds were found.
