Trench Summary

The purpose of opening up this area of T-30 (known as T-30A) was to discover what buildings and/or activities may have taken place here between the OC2/Workshop to the SE and the OC1/Residence and OC3/Tripartite to the NW, especially given the discovery in previous years of large flat stones in adjacent areas that may have been used as pads for columns.  The attempt to come down upon the large flat stone uncovered in the previous season at 49-S/180-E was discontinued because of the difficulties presented in removing a large tree and excavating around its trunk.  Instead, excavation was carried down to sterile soil and bedrock in the northern sector of this area.  No large flat rock was found in the area excavated and no firm indication that a building once occupied this spot was discovered.  Instead, what was discovered was a concentration of tile situated above the bedrock in the northern part of the

area excavated, although not situated directly upon the bedrock, but approximately 40 cm. above it.  This tile concentration diminished and sloped down towards the south over the area where sterile soil was found.  This appears to be a strong indication that this area sloped in antiquity, probably during the archaic phase of the site.  It is possible that the bedrock was open to the air during the Orientalizing phase of the site indicated by the presence of material all the way down to bedrock and sterile soil.  Also, in the SE corner of the area excavated down to sterile soil there was found a small spot against the east baulk wall that still contained material that sunk below the galestra.  This spot was dark in color suggesting the presence of charcoal and burnt material.  This spot may be the edge of the burn lager found in the area of T-30 excavated to the east (see KED-I, 2004).  It would probably be profitable to excavate further this feature to the east.
