A.M.

Because the rocks in Locus 4 remain small and random, it was deemed safe to pick through.  Special care was paid to leaving larger rocks in situ, but a shallow pick pass was executed throughout the trench.  Shallow passes will continue until a new locus or more significant rocks are reached.

Upon sorting, the number of rocks began to decrease.  Another pick pass was done, in search of a new locus.  On the last pass, it was noted that the amount of terra cotta is greater in the northen half of the trench, more evidence that, as expected, the area below the wall consists of erosional deposits.

A third pass was begun in the northern half of the trench because it appeared that a less rocky soil may have been encountered in the southern half.  A tile sherd with a possible inscribed "X" symbol was found in the wheelbarrow ( Find # 1 ).

Baulk walls were trimmed until lunch.

P.M.

After lunch, baulk wall work continued.  The small roots int he trench were clipped and large portions of the large root system exposed int he Southwest corner of the trench were chopped with the ax and removed.  AFter the debris was cleared away, a pick pass was done in the center and north end of the trench, in a continuing effort to make it level with the lower-lying south end. Locus 4 yielded two bowls of terra cotta today and 24 sherds of pottery, including 2 rims and 1 handle.
