Introduction

The purpose of excavating CA46 in the summer of 2000 is to explore the area nearby trenches CA36 and CA37 for the potential evidence of occupation, in particular in the form of habitation or potential industrial production.  The area of Civitate A has received exploratory excavation in the past (see M. Gleba Book II , JBB Book II , JB Book I , JB Book II , JB Book III , TT Book I , TT Book II , TT Book III , and TT Book IV ), resulting in the discovery of a well, two forni, and 2 apparently iron-age middens.  The finds provide further motivation for exploration in order to determine the relationship, if possible, between the three distinct features and within the overall site.

The location of the trench CA46 is north of the path leading to piano del tesoro and west of the PC1 point.  This location was decided upon due to its relative proximity to the forni, middens, and well while also being on the opposite side of the features from the main architectural complex.  Hopefully, this trench, along with trenches CA43-45 and CA47 (see books ACL Book I , PN Book I , MCC Book I , and KH Book I ), will produce material for clarifying the role of teh forni as evidence for ancient metallurgical activity as well as providing a temporal context for them.  Moreover, it is hoped these trenches will provide the same for the well and also enhance our understanding of the site as a whole.
