Conclusion

Completion of excavation in Rectangle 12 to a depth of 70cm failed to reveal evidence of lower building foundation.  Presumably the lower building foundation running through Rec. 9 and 10 ends either prior to or beneath the foundation walls defining the are of Rec. 12.  Excavation of Rec 11 (doorway to upperbuilding complex) may clarify this situation.  Excavation materials (see ) were concentrated primarily in the northern half of the rectangle (grids 1,2,3/A-G), howver, pottery sherds extended to some degree throughout the area.  Very little roof tile was uncovered.  A statue fragment (lion paw - p.31 #11) was recovered from F-1.  Whether this fragment comes

from the upper of lower building material is yet to be determined.  A fine orange impasto bowl ( p. 27 , #1) appears to indicate the presence of lower building material, however, as no foundation walls have been uncovered from the lower building it must be presumed that this material in Rec 12 lay outside the walls of the lower building.  The majority of Bucchero sherds came from the carbon layer 60cm below the surface and 5-10cm in depth.  This layer (see profile, p. 41 ) may slope beneath the surface to the final excavation level in southern grids of the rectangle.

However, in my opinion the 60/70cm level of the carbon layer is consistent throughout the rectangle.  (For a summary of the stratigraphy of Rec. 12 to the 50cm level see Fullerton Bk1 pp. 140-142 )
