Tile 3
Plaster 1.5
Pottery 1
After a morning devoted to inspecting damage, exposing column bases covered at the end of last season, and setting out grid markers, we begin to collect the material washed, and apparently pulled, out of the trench walls, also to clean the eastern end to the level of the floor in preparation for the eastward extension of the trench. Damage from the elements is so far noted in the erosion of the walls and in the fragmented surfaces of certain column bases. Damage from human activity is most evident in the tile and other terracotta fragments pulled from the walls and laid out atop the edge of the trench, mainly in L-N/86-88 (2 cassette tile, 1 box pottery, 1 cassetta of plaster, and a few fragments of heavy coarseware) but also in D/74-76 (1 cassetta of tile) and sporadically elsewhere. In addition, illicit digging in the area has removed the protective covering in V-Q/ 72-73 exposing
some unfired covertiles. Also, it seems that the removal of a stump in 586 has damaged a portion of the ancient floor. We clear the protective packing down to the floor in M-N/85 and clean the year's debris off the packing in M-N/86 and L-N/87. The latter yields a few stray finds including two "slingstones" (Nos. 3 and 4) and a fragment of burnt bone or ivory (No. 6). Cleaning along the trench in O/74-76 also gives some finds including a fragmentary rochetto (No. 1). We also clean down to column bases and floor in 586 and R-S/88-89. Three fragments of bone are bagged.
