Metal Analysis
Several fragments of metal were recovered from CA 72 during the 2012 excavation season. All of the fragments were excavated in Locus 2 , among other ancient materials, and are therefore from an ancient context.
Fourteen of the fragments were bronze and fifteen were iron. While the iron was not typically well preserved, the bronze especially enjoyed a high level of preservation. To that end, a soil sample was taken from Locus 2 in order to later test the soil variables that led to such a condition.
Of the total fragments, a few were cataloged, including 20120059
, 20120059 20120060 , 20120065 , 20120065 20120069 , and 20120199 . 20120199 20120069 is a dragon fibula fragment, which was a popular Orientalizing style and so may be further support that CA 72 was occupied during the Orientalizing Period. 20120059 20120059 , an incised vessel rim fragment, is one of a few preserved pieces of bronze vessels recovered from Poggio Civitate and so provides another example to add to the limited body of information about metal vessels 20120059
at the site. 20120060 is a bronze stopper for a thin-necked bottle, and as of yet is a singular example of a stopper in bronze from Poggio Civitate. 20120065
20120065 , a piece of worked bronze, and 20120065 20120199 20120199 , an iron sheet fragment, do not preserve enough of a shape to definitively tell their ancient functions, but further reinforce the prevalence of metals in the Civitate A area which was excavated in 2012. 20120199Many fragments of slag were also found in CA 72, but will be discussed in a separate slag summary and analysis.
