A.M.

We continued to define the rocks of CD-11B.  The dig director came up to look at the results saying that there is a very good chance that we have a wall.  We will be extending the trench to the south this afternoon in hopes of further exposing the face of the wall.  Due to the angel of the line of the "rock feature"previously mentioned, we will be placing this extension 1 m further west.  The trench will be 3 x 4.

P.M.

We took the closing photos for CD-11B and the closing elevations for CD-11B.  They were as follows:

  • NW:     95 cm b.d.      25.94 m absolute elevation
  • SW:     90 cm b.d.      25.99 m absolute elevation
  • NE:     163 cm b.d.      25.26 m absolute elevation
  • SE:     186 cm b.d.      25.03 m absolute elevation
  • center:     138 cm b.d.     25.51 m absolute elevation

We then began to lay the lines for the new trench which is an extension of CD-11B; the new extension will be known as CD-11C.  We finished setting up the lines for CD-11C and took opening elevations.  Photos will be taken on Monday before work begins in the trench.  The opening elevations for Locus 1 of CD-11C were as follows:

  • NE:     166 cm b.d.      25.23 m absolute elevation
  • SE:     182 cm b.d.      25.07 m absolute elevation
  • SW:     77 cm b.d.      26.12 m absolute elevation
  • NW:     80 cm b.d.      26.09 m absolute elevation
  • center:     104.5 cm b.d.     25.845 m absolute elevation

Because of the previous discrepancy with the laying out of the grid, it was decided to lay out the lines of CD-11C along the grid lines established this week on the slope.  The previous trenches (CD-11; CD-11B) were found not to lay on meter marks of the grid due to a surveying error.  They have since been plotted onto the grid.  CD-11C lies on meter marks of the grid.

Material Yield for July 22:

  • Locus 1B (CD-11B)
    • 1/4 bowl of bulk terracotta
    • 0 pottery sherds
