AM
Opening coordinates were measured for the day for locus 2:
NW (46 S / 168 E) – 27.79 m.AE
NE (46 S / 171 E) – 28.00 m.AE
NE2 (47.81 S / 171 E) – 27.70 m.AE
SW3 (46.82 S / 168 E) – 27.52 m.AE
A 1x2 meter pick pass was completed with emphasis upon the highest elevations within the locus.
A second pick pass was made with concentration again in the northern most meter of Locus 2.
There appears to be a heavier volume of tile in this locus compared to locus 1. This heavier concentration of tile is more evident through the northeastern corner of the trench as well as the northwestern most meter of the trench, a presumed product of the root systems within these regions.
A third pick pass was made in the northeastern 1x2 meters of locus 2.
PM
A pick pass was made peeling back from the south of locus 2 to the north. Along the southern edge of locus 2, a lighter, brown soil is appearing. It is more dry and sandy and though only in pockets, is potentially indicative of a new soil slightly underneath.
Though not much plaster has been recovered thus far, it is to be noted that what little plaster has been procured has derived almost entirely from locus 1 with little to none in locus 2.
It has also been observed that most of the bucchero derived from the trench, has been coming from the excavated regions along the south which border the northern face of the T-22 west extension.
Another pick pass was made to expose more of the sandier soil previously noted in the south.
The tile pieces discovered are beginning to more in-tact and in higher concentrations, mostly in the north.
With the remaining part of the day, trowels were used to scrape and clean the surface of T-92, baulk walls were cleaned and roots trimmed.
Daily closing elevations were taken:
NW (46 S / 168 E) – 27.79 m.AE
NE (46 S / 171 E) – 27.79 m.AE
NE2 (47.81 S / 171 E) – 27.72 m.AE
SW3 (46.82 S / 168 E) – 27.52 m.AE
10 July 2018 end of day totals:
Pottery – 54 pieces
Bone – 7 pieces
Tile – 1.5 bowls
At the end of the day, 40 litres (about 5 buckets) of dirt was obtained for flotation for an archaeobotanical record of locus 2.
