Daily Log

June 18, 2001

This morning, we cleared some more of locus three from the trench bounded by (S 274, E 280), (S 274, E 278), (S 272, E 280), (S 272, E 278).  The final dimensions of the trench as altered a bit from the previous entry: (drawing)

Without further finds, from the third locus, the remainder of the trench was not leveled off and was left as above.  In the late morning we laid out the area for a new trench and by the end of the day, we had excavated it down to an average depth of 7 cm below ground level, where possible: (drawing)

The site for this trench was tranversed by a group of stones, and when we opened the trench we were unsure whether these rocks were connected to a possible architectural feature, or were just an outcropping of bedrock.

Upon the close of the workday, it appears to me to be just an outcropping.  Nevertheless, we were hoping to compare the distribution of artifacts from one side of the outcropping to the other, in order to gain more knowledge of drainage patterns and how artifacts are moved and distributed by them.  Unfortunately, the outcropping takes up most of the trench just 7 cm to 10 cm down, and so the data is not able to be gained (I think at this point) unless we extend the trench I m N (to meet the KLH III- 2001 trench) and at least another 2m S.

Despite the lack of soil, (locus #1 in this area was only 2-3 cm deep), the following finds were made:

about 1 latte box of terracotta

0 special finds

5 pieces of pottery- 3 impasto, 2 coarseware
