Metal Analysis

Forty-eight fragments of metal were recovered from CA 72 during the 2013 excavation season, all from within an ancient context. Nearly half of the fragments were excavated in Locus 4.

Thirty-five of the fragments were bronze and thirteen were iron. While the iron was not typically well-preserved, the bronze especially enjoyed a high level of preservation. Such a level of preservation was similarly observed in CA 72 during the 2012 excavation season.

Of the total fragments ten were cataloged, including 20130010

20130010

20130010 20130010 is a well-preserved bronze leech fibula, while 20130115 is a bronze fibula fragment. 20130042 is a possible bronze stopper fragment, similar to the bronze stopper, 20120065

, recovered from CA 72 in 2012. Other bronze cataloged artifacts include 20130117 20130117 20130117 , a bronze rivet fragment, 20130196 20130196 20130196 , bronze pin fragments, and 20130254 , a folded

bronze sheet.

The four cataloged iron fragments-- 20130060

20130060 20130060 , a coiled iron fragment, 20130098 20130098 20130098 , an iron wedge fragment, 20130099 20130099 20130099 , a curved iron fragment, and 20130139 20130139 20130139 , an iron bar fragment--are poorly preserved and do not have any clear function.

Many fragments of slag were also found in CA 72, but are discussed in the slag summary and analysis.
