III. INTRODUCTION

I.  INTRODUCTION

Previous excavations near the location of T-46 have uncovered the partial remains of another structure of the Orientalizing period (see trench books for T-22, T-22 ext., T-26 and T-30 for details).  These remains consist of four stone column pads in a continuous row and one likely stone column pad nearby but not part of this line.  The existence and placement of these stone column pads suggest that this building had a pavilion style arrangement similiar to the OC2/Workshop, but the remains so far uncovered do not permit a definitive conclusion.  Although this building has now become the fourth structure of the Orientalizing period to be found on Piano del Tesoro, questions about it still remain to be answered.  What are the dimensions of this building?  Was the building a pavilion-like structure similiar to the OC2/Workshop, open on all sides or did it have a wall

or walls on particular sides?  When was the building built, and what was its relationship to the other Orientalizing structures found on Piano del Tesoro?  What type of activities took place in this building?  When and how was it destroyed?  These are some of the questions the excavation of T-46 will attempt to answer.  Although complete answers to these questions are unlikey to result from the excavation of T-46 alone, it will undoubtly contribute to our understanding of what took place there.
