In CB 50, the standard method of excavation will be as follows.  Dirt will be picked with the small end of the pick axe, broken into clumps and hand sorted into buckets.  The buckets will be dumped in the dirt dump located at.

Terracotta will be collected into latte boxes, recorded, and dumped in a dump near the datum tree, approximately 3 meters away. Any pottery of bone found will be collected into latte boxes and brought down the magazzino, measuring approximately 29x9x6 cm, for cleaning and further study.

Speical finds will have their elevations and coordinates taken in relation to the absolute elevation of the site. Datum point for CB 50 is 31.42 mAE. All coordinates are connected with the master grid established in 1991. Special finds are sketched into the trenchbook on site, then sent down to the magazzino for cleaning and further study. Soil type and changes will be noted in the trenchbook and each new locus will be defined, measured, photographed and recorded.  Baulk walls will be kept clean, so the stratigraphy can be clearly seen. Methods may change as necessary as the excavation proceeds due to the specific needs of the trench and site.
