Pottery Analysis
A great amount of pottery was recovered in CA 72 during the 2012 excavation season. In total there were 2025 fragments, many of which had high levels of preservation, despite being fragmentary.
Locus 2 contained the most pottery, at 1913 sherds. Impasto was the most found type, at 1036 sherds. There was also a good deal of coarseware, fine impasto, and bucchero recovered.
Of the total fragments, several were cataloged, including 20120050
, 20120054 , 20120096 , 20120099 , 20120108 , 20120113 , 20120137 , 20120150 , 20120164 , 20120202 , and 20120219 .Many pieces of ridged pottery were found, though none were cataloged. Strap handles were also found at a fairly high frequency, but fewer cataloged than were discovered.
Two fragments of coil made pottery were found, as well as several fragments indicating deeply carinated bodies (uncataloged). Both these styles were employed during the Iron Age, and though not definitive dating tools as the styles
enjoyed a long period of use, may indicate Iron Age levels in CA 72. Additionally, a typologically Iron Age spindle whorl, 20120043
, was uncovered in CA 72, which may further lend credence to the presence of Iron Age material. Many other pottery fragments, especially the finely worked bucchero, are indicative of later time periods, the Orientalizing and Archaic Periods. The presence of these sherds suggests a long period of use of the Civitate A area, with a strong possibility of intersecting technologies from overlapping time periods and continual occupation.
A few fragments of Medieval pottery were recovered, which indicate Medieval activity, though not occupation, in the area of Civitate A.
One peculiar find was that of a squared ceramic shaft fragment, 20120165
, with an unknown use.Other finds further reinforce these conclusions and do not provide any additional information.
