Daily Log

AM

Began the day  by scrapping up the last of the top soil in the meters between 1-3m E.  The new lighter brown claylike soil continues in this area too.  The concentration of rocks in this area is considerably thinner. One piece of pan tile about 5cm in length has appeared at the surface of the lighter brown soil and will be left in place.  Commenced a pick pass across the meters 3-4m E in order to remove the the top soil/humus layer.  The new soil continues in this area.  A few pieces of terracotta have begun to appear in this new soil.  We will now continue to remove the rest of the top soil.  The new soil has been exposed across the entire trench.  We will now clip the roots and sweep the trench preparation for photos and locus declaration.  Elevations for the opening of locus 2 will now be taken.

Photos Taken

Locus 2 declared across the entire trench. Locus 2 consists of a medium brown soil which is considerably more claylike than the top soil that preceeded it.  The soil contains a large number of roots and 5-7cm rocks.  The rocks seem to be concentrated in the north western corner of the trench

but there are small rocks throughout the locus .  There seems to be an increase in terracotta in this locus and a few pieces of worn tile are visible.

Began a pick pass across meter 3-4m E.  The soil seems to be consistant and small worn pieces of terracotta have been uncovered. At the same time, excavation is occuring with trowels in the northwestern corner of the trench where the largest concentration of stones seems to be.  In the northwest corner troweling as revealed a few more stones of roughly 5-7cm in length along side some pockets of smaller stones of approx. 2 cm in length.  At this point, the stones do not seem consistant enough to be a capping feature.  Commenced a pick pass across the area 2-3m E.

PM

The stones in the northwetern corner appear to be floatiing and not part of a capping feature, therefore, we will begin a light pick pass across the area.  Very few stones have appeared in the area so we will continue to pick the area.  The soil has remained consistant and we will continue to look for its extent.  We will now clip the roots in the western most meter of the trench.  Commenced another pick pass across the area between 2-4m E.  The soil is staying cocnsistant with very little material and a few small stones.
