Tesoro 24 Introduction

Tesoro 24 was excavated in order to explore the possibility of the existence of a building similar to the North Extension Building along the eastern flank of the Upper Building complex.  Past excavation in this area was insufficiently carried out, test trenches having been sunk approx. 20 meters distant from the Upper Building walls; T-4, T11-14, and T9-1.

T9 explored a large area adjacent to the northeast flank of the archaic complex.  Architectural remains were not recovered.  Finds from the above trenches were generally sparse.  The majority of these trenches were excavated to a depth of 50 cm at which point galestra was reached.

The excavation of T23 in 1979, however, revealed an extensive deposit

of bronze and ivory material - possible discards from a workshop - approx. 20-25 meters from the southeast corner of the Upper Building.  T23 did not produce any architectural remains during the 1978 season.

The unexcavated area between trenches T23, T4, T11-14 and bordered on the north by T9 is sufficiently large for a building of the size of the North Extension.  A comprehensive grid system for the Eastern flank of the Upper Building has been established.

Beginning from the southeast corner of the outer wall of the Upper Building, the grids run numerically from 1 to 60 towards the northeast corner of the complex.  The grids progress outwards, perpendicular to the Upper Building.

wall, in alphabetical sequence. .  T24 was begun in grids 24, 25/H-T.
