A.M.

The cut of the 15 cm through G 92-97 was completed (only G 93 and G 97 were excavated yesterday) and was extended north into F 93-97. Large amounts of tile were recovered (2 1/2 cassette), as were pieces of pottery (2 boxes). While the soil showed only flecks of carbon in scattered areas, some of the recovered pieces were partially or totally burnt of interest in this area was a large, thick, flat piece of terra cotta (roughly twice the thickness of pan tile), the bottom half badly burnt, which was hit by the pick but which resembles a similar piece in the balk at G91. The pieces of this find were taken to the magazzino for identification and possible reconstruction.

Meters G-H 88-90 were cleaned using hammer and mystaline, to remove the uneven burnt soil left from below the 1987 tile fall. Small amounts of loose tile, pottery, and plaster were removed, but any large pieces of tile will be left in place until the extant of such pieces can be determined, especially in relation to the

tiles in the sutmp in H 91-92.

The tiles among the roots of the stump were cleared and photographed.

*bringing the depth of the trench floor to approximately 45 cm.

P.M.

The 15 cm. cut extended into F 92-97 was completed, * The soil was dark brown with heavy concentrations of deteriorated plaster (giving a reddish tinge to the soil) and some pockets of carbonized material. Some of the tiles from this cut were blackened as well - these were found forthe most part at the bottom of the cut. In addition to the four cassette of tile, bucchero, some bone, impasto, and some coarseware were found (one latte box of pottery). It seems clear that this cut is nicking along the top of the heavy burn and plaster layer seen throughout the T26 area.

As well, more of G-H 88-90 was cleaned and cleared. The soil being excavated was burnt, crumbly and sandy. Small, loose pieces of tile which came loose during cleaning were removed (approx. 1/4 cassetta), but all others were left in place. One box of pottery (including several bone fragments) was taken to the magazino.
