AM

Work began 90 minutes late, in order to let the trench dry out after yesterday's rain.  once work began, a pick pass was made in Locus 8 and hand picks were used to excavate Locus 9 in both the original part of the trench and the extension.  In Locus 9, soil is an olive brown color although the texture is difficult to ascertain, as soil is wet.  Soil is hand sorted directly into buckets in the trench, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved.  While sorting, a piece of iron slag (Find #1) and a non-native conglomerate rock (Find #2) were found.

In Locus 9, a pick pass was made of the extension, moving from north to south.  soil is a medium olive brown color, claylike, and is mottled, with terracotta, limestone, and carbon inclusions; there are noticeably fewer patches of gray, chalky soil in this pick pass than in previous ones.  Soil was hand sorted directly into buckets in the trench, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved.  While sorting, a sherd of ridged pottery (Find #3) and a piece of carbonized wood (Find #4) were recovered.

Locus 9 continued to be hand picked and troweled.  Soil is olive brown but like Locus 8 is becoming more mottled, with terracotta, limestone, and noticeably large carbon inclusions.  Soil continues to be hand sorted in the trench, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved.  Two pieces of vitrified terracotta (Find #5), a possible crucible fragment (Find #6), another piece of vitrified terracotta (Find #7), and an additional piece of vitrified terracotta (Find #8) were found, along with one more

(Find #9).  Much of the vitrified terracotta came from the eastern meters of the original part of the trench and shall now be bulk found.

In Locus 8, another pick pass was made in the extension, moving from north to south.  Soil continues to be olive brown and mottled, with terracotta, limestone, and large carbon inclusions.  Soil continued to be hand sorted into buckets, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved.  High quantities of pottery but a moderate amount of tile were found.  Additionally, an odd piece of ceramic or bone (Find #10) and a small, hollow terracotta bowl (Find #11) were recovered, as well as another possible crucible fragment (Find #13) and an iron fragment (Find #15).

Work continued in Locus 9 with handpicks and trowels.  Soil continues to be olive brown and claylike and mottled, with terracotta and carbon inclusions.  Soil continues to be hand sorted directly into buckets, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved.  High quantities of pottery but relatively little tile was found.  Additionally, a piece of bronze slag (Find #12), a possible crucible fragment (Find #16), and a piece of slipped pottery (Find #14) were recovered.

Work continued in both Loci 8 and 9, with hand picks and trowels, in order to keep the floors of both loci level and define any rocks in the trench floor.  Soil is both loci is olive brown, claylike, and mottled, with terracotta, limestone, and large carbon inclusions and is hand sorted directly into buckets, with 1 in 3 buckets dry sieved.  Higher quantities of pottery were found in Locus 9 than in 8, but in Locus 8, two iron fragments (Find #17) was found.  Also in Locus 8, along the eastern boundary of the extension, a possible line of rocks was found; these shall be defined and left in situ.  While working in Locus 9, more conglomerate rock (Find #18) was recovered, as well as a small bronze disc (Find #19) and a crucible rim fragment (Find #20), a ridged rim sherd (Find #21), a sherd of slipped pottery (Find #22), and a bronze sheet fragment (Find #24).  Back in Locus 9, a bent bronze nail or pin (Find #23) was recovered, as well as

a bronze sheet fragment (Find #24), a piece of glass (Find #25), a piece of ridged pottery (Find #26) and a spindle whorl (Find #27), as well as a piece of braided pottery in the pottery box (Find #28).
