Since the tiles have been removed, a pickpass was made in locus 3.  Some terracotta and pottery are turning up, but nothing significant.  Trowels are being used to level the area after the pass.  The are is also being leveled

Leveling was continued in the afternoon in locus 3. Work was also done in locus 2.  It does not appear that the rock pack in locus 2 moves west into locus 3.  We are removing pottery and terracotta from the surface of locus 2 in preparation to pickax in the morning to go beneath the pack.  This needs to be done to determine whether the rock pack and the tiles made up an archaic or orientalizing surface.  If nothing is found underneath, then it will be assumed that the surface was orientalizing.
