STRATEGY: 1. Remove wall f4 to make area of sounding basically level & largely ready fo excavation. 2. Plan wall f85 & f87. 3. Continue search for surface f89.
SUMMARY: 1. Wall f 4 removed & all underlying material called 1227. Outer sounding now largely all at one level. 2. Wall f85 & f87 planned. 3. Removed 1225 - treated 1225 as possible surface so soil removed under it was distinguished as 1228. 1228 directly overlay surface f89. At end of day we had exposed surface f89 over all of the trench except for a c. 2 x 2m area in the centre which is very badly disturbed by animal action. 4. Overnight moisture helped to reveal a semi-circle of plaster within the 'tholos' f87 so f87 is two concentric circles - outer of stone & inner of plaster.
