July 16 Friday A.M only

Since the stone feature apparently continued down, the trench surrounding the eastern half was deepened to expose three more layers of set stone and dirt fill around them: this extended the depth of the trench to approx. 2 meters deep from the top of the galestra level surrounding the feature.

Size of the feature remains approx. the same in these lower levels with diameter N - S approx 1,90m; depth E- to center rock 1.00m, and exposed height at present cut, approx 2.0m

Two layers of the very rough stones and dirt coarsing were removed , one at a time; the stones were set in apporx. two rows, one smaller and inside the other, with the center ring being more carefully set - to form an empty center with flat, rectangular inner edges on the stones lining the opening.

The plug in the top layers of feature was exposed- it consisted of a very large stone set vertically in the center of the fill, with pan tiles and cover...

tiles wedged into the area now filled with dirt between center stone and walls of feature.  This large stone measured 80cm. in height by 45cm in greatest width on the flat vertical face exposed by the removal of eEAstern half of central fill in feature.

Finds from loose dirt in Eastern half of plug sent down

  • 1 box of tile fragments
  • 1 strawberry box coarse sherds
  • 1 bone (large vertebra)

Finds from western section of fill removed with the large rock in plug - 2 boxes of tile
