The trench - 5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide - was set at approximately right angles to the agger, 11.5 meters west of its crest, 6.5 meters west of its base. At 60 cm depth at the west end a layer of yellowish-white soil appeared, running out about 170 cm. From there across to the east end of the trench, the topsoil gave way to a blocker level which first appeared at 40 cm. Also at the east end was an outcrop of stone beginning 50 cm down.
Nothing was found in the yellow layer. The topsoil and blacker layers produced similar material - about three boxes of tile and pottery fragments, most of them small and all extremely worn. Among the pottery were several parts of handles and bases and perhaps fifteen to twenty pieces of bucchero. Also found were several bits of bronze.
