THURSDAY, 8 JULY 2010

MORNING: Further trimmed the baulks and cleaned the trench in preparation for opening photos. Locus 4 and 5 were declared. Locus 4 is the yellowish hard clay in the eastern part of the trench, in between the larger outcropping in the SW, the central rock, and the stump on which the boundary stone is planted. Locus 5 is the outcropping of rock in the SW corner).

After declaring Locus 4, a pick pass was completed across the whole locus. The soil is still a yellowish clay with small white inclusions. There are still roots, but the proportion of larger tree roots to thinner roots is increasing. 4 very small & worn (ca 1 cm square) fragments of terracotta were found at the edges of the locus. Two more pick passes were completed in Locus 4 across the entire locus. The yellowish clay is still present but no finds were recovered. After that, 3 shallow pick passes were completed in a higher section of Locus 3 in the NE corner. Four very small & worn chunks of terracotta were recovered. The last pick pass uncovered some more rocks, possibly an extension of the

rocks in the SE corner. During the pick passes in the NE, work continued in defining a square-shaped crevice in the rock outcropping in the SW. It was further cleaned and defined. In the dirt a single fragment of terracotta was recovered. Additional cleaning uncovered two rocks in the crevice, but there is still dirt in the crevice, between the rocks inside and those making up its edges.

AFTERNOON : Three pick passes were made in Locus 3 to level the floor of the trench and to determine the northern extent of the rock outcropping in the SW corner. A few small worn pieces of terracotta were recovered. The second pickpass focused on the area of the former northern stump. Some more of its remnants were removed. The first and third pick passes extended through the entire Locus west of the boundary stone. Another pick pass was made in Locus 4, with emphasis on bringing down the higher sections immediately adjacent to the rocks protruding from the south baulk. The soil in Locus 4 is still yellowish and a hard & compacted clay. Organic inclusions include some earthworms and roots. The pickpass in Locus 4 and the 3 pickpasses in locus 3

have uncovered a large rock protruding to the SW from beneath the stump on which the boundary stone is erected.

FINDS :

Locus 3: - 24 pcs terracotta (1/20 bowl)

Locus 4: - 5 pcs terracotta (1/100 bowl)

Locus 5: - 1 pc terracotta

Closing Elevations :

NW Corner: 168 cm BD = 28.32 m abs elev

NE Corner: 168 cm BD = 28.32 m abs elev

Center: 170 cm BD = 28.30 m abs elev
