Introduction

During the excavation season 2002, T28 North was excavated along the southern face of the retaining wall south of the Workshop (OC2).  This retaining wall, understood preliminarily as a terrace wall was discovered in 2001 (TBK II).  The goals for T28 N (KT II) were left unfulfilled at last season's end.  This year we will begin by removing the backfill from T28 N down to the plastic laid at the end of last season.  We will then excavate an area somewhat more than one meter wide along the western and southern edges of T28 N (2002).  This will join the segments of T 28.

Our goals will remain the same as those justifying the excavation of T28 N in 2002.  They include:

finding the surface associated with the retaining wall, determining the physical and chronological relationship between the retaining wall and the tile spread in T28 South (JBB III) and the Workshop, determining the nature and the chronology of the retaining wall by what flowed over it, and identifying the use and timeframe of the area south of and below the Workshop.  We also will continue to search for the kiln which

would have been associated with the workshop (TBK II).

The trench to be designated T 28 North (2003) is \x91L'-shaped abutting T28 N (2002) on the South and West.  It is bounded by the points:

192.00 East, 80.00 South 193.40 E, 80.47 S 193.36 E, 84.16 S 195.27 E, 84.13 S 195.34 E, 85.34 S 192.00 E, 85.25 S

In KT II 2002, T28 N was delimited by 192 and 194 E and 81 and 85 S.  The confusion with this year's measurements was a result of a series of compounded errors in measurement that has now been corrected (JBB IV).

We will begin by excavating approximately 10 cm at a time, by pick-axe, with sweeping in between, until stratigraphic interfaces are uncovered.  We will then use trowels and flat shovels to define these stratigraphic interfaces and the individual artifacts and features within.  At the end of each day of excavation, the entire excavation area will be swept clean with brooms.  For the sake of consistency, we will be measuring heights around the perimeter of the trench at the opening and closing of each work day.  These heights are recorded together and presented on page 194.
