Morning

We remocve the rocks exposed and drawn yesterday. We begin Cut 4 in GG 0-gamma and move southward reaching DD and the tile fall. The depth of this cut is 20-30cm. The rocks removed are bedded just above the floor of Cut 3 on a dark, almost black, soil.

The soil of the cut below (4) is yellow and clayey but gritty and contains some bits of charcoal. At or near the bottom there is a sudden change to a dark heavy burn layer corresponding apparently to that yielding seeds further south in AG-X and perhaps in R22.

We attempt to follow yel\xf2low only but find that the black rises sharply in 2. Consequently, we move in yellow with picks in 0 and with hammers in Z. Yellow yields much pottery especially heavy utility vessels in coarseware and impasto, but some bucchero. There is little tile but some excellent bronze (#2) in the southeast FF0 yellow gives a great mass of carbonized wood, of which we save as many fragments as possible (#4). This was found as though wedged between 2 or 3 small stones.

As we move south in 0 at a depth of 15cm, this yellow soil dissolves into a dark, light burn soil which intensifies by DD and the tile fall. Here we encounter an enormous amount and variety of pottery including numerous fragments of a distinctive kind of orangeware vase found yesterday at Cut 3 and clean-up levels. Until the heavy burn layer below, we do not enter a significant new stratum. Tile also increaces-if only to a small amount.

Among the pottery note # 's 9, 12 + 15. Near the tile fall in EE-DD: more seeds (#10); including kernels, "peas", and now "nocciole". Here we commence seiving and add "barley" to the list. We move more south again in Z-gamma largely in yellowish non-burn and find a bitt less pottery again from bucchero and finewares through pithos fragments. Note especially the stamped #13.

Again the clayey soil darkens but burn matter is scant. Until near the tile fall and in DD Z. Here the soil yellows for a bit; also deeper strokes near the fall yiels some fine bucchero and buff sherds (so additional seiving in AA Z yields more seeds and some unusual orgainic matter (# 's 1 and 3).

Finally, we continue removing the old wheelbarrow earth in the east.

Afternoon

Work solo at the trench completes our sketch of the tile fall in AG-X CC-DD 0-Z, begins work on an axonometric sketch of AG-X, and permits careful measurement and examination of Cut 4 completed today.

The floor pervious to Cut 4 was virtually level. That of cut 4 is not since it generally follors yellow soil and avoids the heavy burn below. Accordingly, it is deepest, ca. 30cm, in the northeast just west of a large rock unearthed in the corner, to just over 15cm in the east wall, and to 10-15cm in the south half of the west wall. Heavy burn soil is apparent over much of the floor, particularly in the east and south.
