A.M.
The day began with a pick pass of about 7 cm deep across the northern half of the trench. Sorting consisted of shovelling in buckets and sorting into the wheelbarrow. An unusual piece of pottery, possibly a tondo, with a peculiar ridge (
) of grayware or fine impasto. It was also noted that the amount of small rocks turned up in the picked area has increased. This change was determined to be significant enough to warrant the declaration of a new locus ( 4 ). Locus 2 was closed with elevations of:
- NE 122.5 cm BD 22.665m ae
- NW 98 cm BD 22.91m ae
- SE 167 cm BD 22.22m ae
- SW 143.5 cm BD 22.455m ae
- Center 128 cm BD 22.66m ae
Locus 2 yielded half of a bowl of terra cotta and 6 pieces of pottery -- none of it diagnostic -- today. Locus 4 was opened and levelled for photographs. It is characterized by medium brown soil with a large number of small rocks. Clearing Locus 4 for photographs turned up on an unusual and possibly warped piece of tile ( ) and a piece of terra cotta with a partial perforation ( ).
Baulks were trimmed until lunch
P.M.
Photographs of Locus 4 were taken. A levelling pass was put in throughout the trench to further examine the new locus and to ensure that the small rocks do not relate to any architectural
feature. Trowelling and sweeping continued, revealing more rocks. Due to their random placement and small size, they appear to be erosional deposits and/or washout from the retaining wall. At the end of the day, the trench was levelled. Locus 4 yielded one and 1/2 bowls of terra cotta and 22 sherds of pottery, including one rim and one handle.
