Introduction
The purpose of continuing the excavation of T-30 is to further define what buildings and/or activities took place between the Orientalizing Complex Building 2/Workshop (OC2/Workshop) lying to the southeast of this area and the Orientalizing Complex Building 1/Residence (OC1/residence) and the Orientalizing Complex Building 3/Tripartite (OC3/Tripartite) lying to the northwest of this area.
In 1978 a stone resembling a column pad was found in T-22, which lies immediately to the west of T-30. No mention is made of this object in the trench book (SL-I), but there is a photo (p. 100) and a drawing (p. 108) of it.
During the clearing of the backfill of T-26 in 2003, which lies immediately to the east of T-30, a large flat sone was noticed. A measurement was taken between this stone and the one found
earlier in T-22. The distance measured between the stones suggested that both may have been used as column pads ( CED-I, p. 86 ). However, further stones of similiar type and with appropriate measurements would need to be found to confirm the former existence of row(s) of columns.
The opening up of T-30 in the same year was due, in part, to see if evidence for the former existence of such row(s) could be found.
A large flat stone was discovered in the northwest corner of the area of T-30 excavated, partially imbedded in the baulkwall (49-S/180-E). It measures 5.4 m. from the stone in T-22 ( AGG/CNT-I, pp. 115 & 117 ). The measurement is highly suggestive of a row of such stones since the inter-columniation of the OC2/Workshop is 2.7 m.
The purpose of opening up the current area of T-30 is to come down upon
the northwest corner of this stone to determine its full dimensions and, if possible, to discover what activities or structural elements may have been associated with it.
