Observations In approximately the middle of SU 1401 there is a dramatic slope down toward south where 1173 (tufo floor) is truncated and find lower floor level at bottom of slope to threshold SU 1394.
Position Western edge in southern half of trench, northern limit close to 2010 excavation limit.
Shape Long, roughly rectangular.
Layer Surface Roof tiles focused in northern half of SU, some rubble in south.
Layer Inclusion Observations about halfway through dramatic slope down toward south to threshold.
Layer Thickness Observations decreases toward northern limit and tufo floor 1173.
Layer Interface Sharp
Non-Soil Sample Size Very small
Non-Soil Sample Type Charcoal
Finds Observations Black gloss: four rims, one wall, and one base belong to one vessel. Uncertain thin-walled ware comparanda; terra sigillata possibly intrusive, so SU may be of an earlier date than indicated on spot date. Fabric samples of tile collected.
Ceramics Observations One nearly whole black gloss vessel, inconsistent condition of sherds overall.

Interpretation

SU 1401 seems to be accumulation layer cut by SU 1229. It contains little pottery and animal bone and covers what appears to be 2 different floor phases. In the north the continuation of tufo floor 1173 and in the southern half an older, lower phase that is associated with the entry (threshold SU 1394) level. Very southern end and edge next to wall 1058 seems to slope downward and lower floor seems truncated possibly by a foundation cut for the wall but further excavation is needed.
