Scanning method Focal animal samples (Altmann, 1974) lasting 20 minutes, taken each hour of the day (07.00-18.00). A continuous record of the elapsed time of each activity bout was recorded. Feeding bouts began when the animal first made physical contact with a food item and ended when the baboon either did not contact a new item of the same food type for at least two seconds, switched to a new food type, or began a different activity. Instantaneous samples (Altmann, 1974) 30 seconds before and after each focal sample were also taken.
