Thin-walled ware: two rims with handle; one join in base. Terra sigillata: one rim with base, five rims join, two rims and one wall join / two rims and one wall join. African cookware: one join with rims. Commonware: wall to base join; many sherds seem to come from the same vessels. Fineware: base to wall join; four wall joins. Painted fineware: handle join to wall sherd. Amphora: one rim with partial handle; many joins among sherds. Tile: fabric sample taken. Lamp: one rim join. Stone: one piece worked stone; one piece sandstone that has been in contact with glass. Bronze: sheet. Iron: twenty-three nails, four sheet fragments, twenty-three spikes, one of which seems intentionally bent; two other pieces. Slag: mixed metal and glass. Many sherds in this SU, particularly commonware, amphora, thin-walled ware, fineware, and terra sigillata, appear to come from the same vessel or join. Terra sigillata is in particularly good condition and several sherds should have comparanda but will require further searching. Comparanda thus far fit a Iulio-Claudian date for the SU.

Interpretation
|
SU 5016 contained many large animal bones, a variety of pottery, including several nice lamps, tiles, shells, lead, bronze and a lot of iron nails and fragments as well as SF 713-722 and SF 724-26. Due to the large variety and quantity of material found in SU 5016 it appears that this was a fill for a construction cut (SU 5017) of wall 5018. This fill seems to indicate a later phase of wall construction as it does not continue to the lower course of the wall.
