General remarks | this locus was first excavated as a wall, when it became clear it was not a wall it was excavated as a pit. when we hit a floor L9 we realised that the pit had stopped further up the balk but it had not been apparent. therefor only the earliest KTs were in the pit the deeper KTs are part of the floors that begin approx 60 cm bellow the bottom of the pit. this pit was mostly rock and potsherds with dirt filler. There were 9 large pieces of thich corse pottery found. three were found together in situ bellow the level of the pit. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
