Observations Grave cut along the northern limit and three adjacent semicircular cuts abutting the western wall.
Position Central in area B 2011, central to north-east of house.
Shape square
Layer Surface mostly flat, averaging an inch below northern tufo floor sections. Very slight slope to south.
Layer Inclusion Observations Sparse inclusions of rock and tile. Northern portion has crushed tufo floor.
Layer Interface Sharp
Non-Soil Sample Type Charcoal
Finds Observations Approximate dating of layer from -900 to -400 based on the low quality of commonware and the abundance of early ceramic classes. Black gloss is likely intrusive.
Ceramics Observations Apart from dolium, most sherds are small and few are diagnostic.

Interpretation Remains of later tufo floor visible at surface , evidence of earlier tufo floor visible in section provided by later drainage cut along eastern perimeter. Bordered on east, south and west by walls of cut tufo block, on north by opus mixtum wall. Eastern wall appears to be set into soil, could indicate leveling of room 2, which has no visible slope. 3 western cuts and northern grave cut might show later activity in area. Rubble along eastern wall may relate to the wall itself. SU 1399 is intentional deposit above an earlier clay floor (SU 1462). Large boulders near the wall help support this. It was deposited in order to raise the floor level and construct the tufo floor.
