Description | Fragment of an impasto double handle, preserving straight interior section joined to the rim. The handle is in the form of a female figure, winged and viewed frontally. The irregularity of the lateral sides, especially the rounded protuberances at the bottom, suggests this piece was hand-made and not mold-made. Her arms are bent at the elbows, held in front of her chest, and clasped together in the center holding her wings. The wings curve out and upward across her shoulders and then taper inward at eye level. The head is in much higher relief than the rest of the body, thin and triangular in shape. Incised almond-shaped eyes, a round squat nose, thick lips, and a receding chin form the facial features. The sides of the head drop off sharply to join the back surface. The lower body is columnar with two roundish protuberances at the base. |
Fabric Description | Impasto, fine grain. Burned various shades of brown. |
