FRIDAY, JULY 24
A.M.
NORTH
The cut begun Thursday was continued from M E188/S50-E187/S49-50. Again, the soil removed in this cut was congrous with Locus 11, but revealed that darker soil beneath. The depth was measured to be approximately 77 cm bd. Finds included worked bone and a bronze fibula pin or needle (see Finds #3 and #4). 1 latte box of pottery and 110 terra cotta fragments were recovered.
SOUTH
The day began with measuring the depth of what appeared to be a new locus 12 of dark soil. However after the average depth was recorded as 87 cm bd, it was discovered that the western 2 meters, M E186/S53-54, were not brought down far enough. There was still a layer of plaster on top of the soil. We cleaned off the remaining 3-5 cm of plaster and then began a pick pass in the eastern 2 meters of the trench. We worked on either side of
the cover tile that lies near the 187 meter line (see page 79 for plan.) The tile appears to have plaster underneath and many terracotta fragments surroudning it. Finds include fragments of a fine incised impasto vessel. Also plaster samples were taken. In locus 10, 50 fragments of terra cotta and 1/4 a cassetta of plaster were unearthed. Locus 12 had 10 fragments of terra cotta and 1/4 of a latte box of pottery recovered.
