were taken of the tile concentration located in meters E186/S49-50 ( see p 43 ), the photographer used both black and white film and color slide film. Elevation were also measured and recorded. The depth of the trench floor ranged 49 to 58 cm bd, with the tile concentration at 49-55 cm bd in the western end.

Excavation was begun in meters E187-188/S49-50 and more densly packed terracotta tiles were discovered. Work proceded with baulk hammers and mestaline in an effort to level the area of the entire trench (E186-188/S49-50) and define the extent of the tile. The soil restin atop the tiles maintains the locus 3n designation. Terracotta, ceramic, and organic material were recovered, and all tile was determined to be from the previously designated locus 4n ( see p. 43 )

The color of the locus 3n soil was determined to be 2.5Y 4/3 (olive brown), using a Munsell chart.

A complete account of all recovered material will be recorded in today's P.M. entry.

P.M.

The level of soil was lowere in meter E186-188/S49-50, in preparation to document the tile spread throughout the entire trench.

Today's work in locus 3n produced 35 impasto and coarseware fragments, 1 piece of creamware, and one fragment of bucchero. In addition, a bucchero pesante rim was found in the latte box, but could be identified as being from locus 3n (Find #1).

Today's work in locus 4n yielded ~460 fragments of terracotta, and among the tile 5 pieces of ceramic (including 1 frag. of creamware) were recovered. 6 bones were also found in the confines of locus 3n.
