Daily Log

July 13, 1999

This mornings work began in meters E186/S49&50. Soil remains dark brown with its designation of locus 16. Stratigraphically, the burn layer appears deeper than other layers so far. 7 Latter boxes of pottery and bone as well as one full cassette of tile as well as six special finds. The amount of carbon and charcoal within the trench has dwindled significantly which could suggest that we are coming to the end of the burn layer.

Continued to excavate within meters E188/S49-50. Large quantities of bucchero, three of which were made special finds (find #9,11,12), continue to be found and separated from the other pottery and bone. When beginning a pick pass in meters E187/S49-50 a noticable change in soil color could be distinguished. The dark brown carbon & charcoal filled soil gave way to a lighter brown, clay-like soil which was designated locus 17. Locus 17 does have some carbon inclusions while locus 16 appears to slope into the confines of locus 17. We cleared down locus 16 with mestaline to differentiate where

locus 16 and locus 17 start and end. We will begin excavation of locus 17 at that point.
