STRATEGY: Continue definition of f273.

SUMMARY: Remaining segment of face in NE corner of f273 clarified. Continued by scraping down the surfaces of remaining unexcavated areas. Possible intrusive 'pit' noted 27 Aug 98 was further defined and excavated as lot 2027. It consisted of a looser, red/brown matrix with darker, vaguely ashy patches distinct from the light brown pise rubble of 2025 surrounding it. Rodent holes were present in the deposit, but in general it had the appearance of a shallow pit cut into the pise rubble, bottoming out on a harder, clayey surface which, if continuous, may relate to f273. Because the deepest point was adjacent to the baulk, however, the exposure was quite small. Two palm-size fragments of a single vessel were sitting on the surface. The pit has been designated f275, but due to its small size and potential disturbance, no sample was taken. The sketch pertains to the SE corner of the trench, in which attempts to define the walls of f273 have instead identified a possible hearth feature, identified by red/white 'lines' on the surface and in the excavation cut, cut into pise rubble and possibly disrupting wall allignments.
