Daily Trench Summary

Area D

Trench 5

August 7, 2002

After sorting out the pit situation yesterday, the focus today was on trying to trace (if it exists) the surface related to the Ubaid contexts northward in the areas under where the pits were and having Andrew grind do what he could on getting the burial in the far NW uncovered.

Both turned out relatively good results, but not quite enough to prepare for the plan shot we had wanted to do tomorrow, so it will have to be postponed for a day or two. The main reason for this is that the surface which was finally discovered in the latter part of the day today is an earthen one and very difficult and time-consuming to trace, in addition to having small patches of plaster. It will probably take a day to trace this sufficiently and turn up Ubaid-type pottery beyond the two sherds revealed today. Hopefully we will be done with what we can by the end of the day tomorrow and prepared for a plan shot early on Saturday. In the process of trying to find the surface we also uncovered a large ceramic artifact, maybe a potstand or something similar, N of the remains of pit L5122. Though it is not really on a surface, it is an interesting find. It was left in situ in hopes of getting it into the plan shot if we cannot trace the surface to under it.

Andrew had the following things to say about the burial—

The condition of the skeleton is very poor in terms of quality of the bone preservation, though so far they are all there and mostly in tact. However, excavating them is rather difficult as the flake and take damage quite easily, in particular the skull and left scapula. The position is with legs bent under the chest and the head craned very far down. So far there is no clear burial trench, though a lot of very small pieces of charcoal have been encountered near in and around the skeleton, as well as several pieces of pottery, animal bone and lithics. This could indicate the skeleton was either unceremoniously dumped in a pit or died in a collapse, though definitely making such a statement right now would be a leap.

In the area immediately S of the skeleton we uncovered a partial bone bead and what appears to be a large ceramic artifact of some type with a tang extending up and a hole in it, though most of it remains in situ. It did take some damage from people working in and around the skeleton as space is at a premium there.

Goals for tomorrow are to finish uncovering the skeleton and to trace the floor to what extent it can be traced.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
