Today is Thursday and it is the first time that D8 has been working for two days because I was ill. With the floor completely cleared and the wall uncovered the plan for today was to carefully examine the layout of the north third of the trench. Towards this end I first had the guys remove the area bonded by L14 to the north, L9 to the west and L11 to the south. This area, now L18, was brought down to the level of the step bellow it (bottom of L5.) The purpose for this was to find the edge of the wall L14 and to see if the wall extended all the way to L9. When we brought L18 down we found a patch of floor. The guys also removed the wheel barrow ramp which was in the south part of the trench running up onto the south balk. This uncovered the rest of the area which had been designated as L17. When it was uncovered it was clear that there were actually 4 loci in what had been L17.
L17 was divided as follows: L20 is an ash pit, L21 is an outside surface of burned mud brick, L17 is the mud brick wall, and L22 is the fill are north of the wall.
Bradley came over to help with documentation, photography and clearing of the wall L14. With his help we swept the wall with the straw brooms and photographed it. As it was cleaned it became clearer that L14 does not go all the way to L9. The area between the edge of L14 and L9 is now L19. L19 is also mud brick and there is a clear seam where L19 meets L9. This may mean that L19 and L14 are two walls next to each other. L19 is riddles with animal holes. After breakfast we devoted a considerable amount of time to divining what was going on in L11. Part of the confusion was that there were mud brick pieces throughout the area. We cut the edge of the section which was already present from the original excavation. In doing this we found a white surface on which the mixed up mud brick, soil, pottery ect was resting. We also clearly saw the edge of a defined mud brick wall. This new wall runs E/W and is L23. The rest of the wall appears to have fallen over on to the white surface. The fall is L24. We ended the day be beginning the removal of L24.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
