Final Trench Summary

Introduction:

Trench D6 was started in 2002 excavation season directly south of Trench D4. This is on the Southern slope of the main mound of Kenan Tepe. The reasoning behind this placement was to capture views of the continuations of surface and architecture found in D4 during the 2001 season. After three non work seasons at the trench, we started to excavate in 2004 excavation season again.

Excavation Notes:

The trench needed a lot of cleaning after three years. First of all, we were cleaning the trench and baulks. Then we took opening elevations and pictures. We started to excavate with new locus number 57.

First, we focused pebble surfaces and places at the trench. In sequence, we found L58, L64, L72 and L82 pebbles surface during the season. I believe they were street and people replaced the street couple time in 2nd millennium with pebble. We took HAP sample from L58 and L64 in the week. The surface L58 was from 2002 excavation season. We found the other pebble surface L64 under surface L58.

On the other hand, we found some structures east of L64 surface (street) area. L66 and L68 could be room and we found a door way (L67) with in situ door socket between these two rooms (L66-L68).

Under L64 pebble surface, we found a sub floor area (L71). When we excavated L71, we found another pebble surface L72.

We found many rock groups on east of the surface (street) L72. But we didn’t understand the area yet. It is possibly, they could be some structure walls. We found second in situ door socket under the door way L67. Possibly, people used to replace the door way area couple times in 2nd millennium. On the other hand, we found mudbrick walls L60, L62 and a rock wall L61 NW corner of the trench. These walls were almost under surface L58. They could be modern with the pebble surface L64. But possibly, they used to support the furnace.

        During the second week of excavation, we focused on the pebble surface (street) L72 and the area around the street. First, we excavated L60, 61, 62, 63 (NW of the street) in order to understand the surface L72, which was positioned under these loci. We found a 4.15x1.05m long mudbrick wall (L79) under these loci. The wall L79 runs in same direction and has the same position as the upper walls L60 and L61. We didn’t see any mudbrick around the east side of the surface (street) L72 area during the week. We found some rock groups at the end of last week. After cleaning the area, we correctly saw all architecture at the area. We found building L73, which has very big and strong walls (3-4 courses big rocks).

L78 could be another structure. It has a cobble wall. However, we found another door way L75 under door way L67. It is between L73 and L78 structures. The door way L75 is very similar with the door way L67 (both door ways have an in situ door socket). Then we found two free areas around the door way L75. The first free area (L77) is north of the door way L75 and second (L80) is east of the door way L75. It is possible that these free areas had mudbrick walls, but we didn’t see any mudbrick lines in the excavation season. After this we worked around another unknown area L69. It is a border for the surface (street) L72. After excavating the area, we found a couple of big rocks between the surface L72 and L69. We still haven’t identified the area, but it could be another structure on east part of the surface (street) L72.

Finally, I want to keep all rock walls for next year. We need more working at the area in order to understand. I think we will see more structures in the trench next year. We need to excavate other pebbles surface in order to understand some unknown areas. We saw many pebble surfaces on the furnace pit section. It is possible that, we could find other structures with the pebbles surface (~street).
