20 July 2022 AM: In order to document the linear limestone feature (with some tile fragments among the stones) Locus 7 was closed and the feature was opened as Locus 8. Closing photos were taken of Locus 7 and opening photos were taken of Locus 8. Opening elevations and coordinates of Locus 8: NW: 26.97m AE 173E/58S NE: 26.96m AE 174E/58S SE: 26.94m AE 174E/60S SW: 27.16m AE 173E/60S Munsell: 10YR 7/2 light gray In order to explore whether and how the linear stone feature extends to the north, it was decided to extend the trench 2m to the north for a width of 1m up from Locus 8 (yesterday’s extension west). For this purpose brush, grass, and plant matter was clipped and raked north of the trench for 2.5m. The extension was laid out by extending 2m north on the 173E and 174E grid lines. The area was opened as Locus 9. It was photographed and opening elevations were taken: NW: 26.79m AE 173E/56S NE: 27.05m AE 174E/56S SE: 27.09m AE 174E/58S SW: 26.95m AE 173E/58S Munsell: 10YR 6/3 pale brown Locus 9 was handpicked to loosen the sunbaked soil. The soil was compact, light brown and very dry clay. There were inclusions of small stones as well as one very large worked stone emerging in line with the linear stone and mortar feature to the south (Locus 8). This stone will remain in place for the time being. There were also rare inclusions of tile and pottery. PM: Handpicking and scraping with trowels continued in Locus 9. The soil is light brown, compact, and a mix of clay and silt. There were inclusions of small terra cotta fragments, stones, and a few pottery sherds. The stone inclusions are mostly medium sized limestone and concentrated in the eastern 2/3 of the locus. They are being defined and left in place in order to determine their relationship with the linear stone feature (Locus 8). There are some medium sized tile fragments which are included among the stones, just as in Locus 8, and they are being left in place as well. As part of the scraping, the eastern baulk wall was defined and roots were clipped. Daily artifact total, Locus 9: 41 bulk tile fragments 1 bulk plaster fragment 19 bulk pottery fragments End of day elevations, Locus 9: NW: 26.77m AE NE: 27.01m AE SE: 26.98m AE SW: 26.95m AE
