In 2022, T100 is established in order to investigate the northern profile of the area north of a building intermittently excavated between the late 1980s and early 2000s which has become known as Orientalizing Complex 2/Workshop (OC2) at and below the elevation of said building. For this purpose T100 is placed just north of OC2 and shares a baulk wall with T26, the trench exploring that structure. This structure consists of a plaster floor interspersed with three rows of limestone column pads which supported wooden beams carrying a terra cotta roofing system. The column pads are irregularly and occasionally augmented by flanking smaller stones which are hypothesized to have lent support to the wooden beam structure in some manner. It was contemporary with Orientalizing Complex 1/Residence (OC1) and Orientalizing Complex 3/Tripartite Building (OC 3), but preceded by Early Phase Orientalizing Complex 4 (EPOC 4; see KRK XIV), possibly an earlier residence, and Early Phase Orientalizing Complex 5 (EPOC 5), possibly an earlier workshop. T100 is positioned in order to parallel to the east T22 excavated in 2019 (see EC XIV) and to incorporate the western 2m of T50 excavated in 2009 (see DWM II). In previous excavation, T50 was excavated down to an Orientalizing surface outside OC2 and T22 uncovered a depression below the Orientalizing layer that seemed to predate the destruction of OC2. More investigation is needed to clarify the function of this area in and before the Orientalizing phase. To that end, the aim of T100 in the 2022 season is: ● To uncover the N-S profile of the stratigraphy north of OC 2 in the west ● To compare said stratigraphy with the stratigraphy of T? excavated west of it in 2019 ● To determine the nature and function of the area north of OC 2 ● To better understand the building techniques employed in OC 2 ● To uncover details which will clarify the chronology of the OC structures in relation to the EPOC structures
