STRATEGY: 1. Complete excavation of 1506 and 1507. 2. Remove door jamb stone by cutting back southern section (1511). 3. Begin excavation of 1508.

SUMMARY: 1. Completed excavation of 1506- most of tumble in/dumped in stones now removed from thrench (excavated these in section). Began removal of an arbitrary spit beneath this (1508), which included pot, flint and bone finds. 2. Completed excavation of 1507. The SW corner appears to contain much bone and animal holes, which at first was suspected to be a pit (contained a piece of late roof tile, which may also suggest a pit dug into this corner and into prehistoric levels). Also, soil has much calcite. We therefore decided to excavate that corner as a new and separate lot (1510: probably to begin tomorrow). The rest of the southern end is to be excavated tomorrow as 1509, stepping it back into 1508 and trying to trace the limits of this lot northwards across the trench. 3. Removed the door jamb and large stones which are all part of the late tumble/dump and had to cut the southern section back c. 20cm x c. 1cm to do so (or they would be left on pillars (?) of earth, which would restrict the area of the operation or possibly cave in). This section cleaning lot is 1511. Piece of chaff and cooked clay, perhaps from a tanour found in 1506 (not kept).
