15 July 2022 AM: In the morning it became clear that after the scraping in Locus 1 yesterday there were changes in stratigraphy. Locus 2 also revealed two stratigraphic areas distinct from one another. In preparation for closing photos and the opening of new loci the trench was swept and the baulk walls were straightened. Bone was present in both the cleaning of Locus 1 and 2, and Locus 1 also produced inclusions of tile, plaster, and pottery during cleaning. SF 45 Locus 2 174.32E/58.06S 26.53m AE Burnt bone 6 fragments After cleaning Locus 1 and Locus 2 were closed. Closing photos and elevations were taken. Locus 1 closing elevations: NW: 26.63m AE NE: 26.64m AE SE: 26.77m AE SW: 26.78m AE Locus 2 closing elevations: NW: 26.54m AE NE: 26.55m AE SE: 26.51m AE SW: 26.54m AE The compact layer of plaster inclusions and tile fragments in the south of the trench measuring 2.00m x 1.30m (but with an uneven northern side) was declared Locus 3. Photos and elevations were taken. Munsell: 5YR 7/4 pink NW: 26.68m AE 174E/62.70S NE: 26.66m AE 176E/62.70S SE: 26.77m AE 176E/64S SW: 26.76m AE 174E/64S The soil layer between Locus 3 and the bedrock to the north, measuring 2.00m x 1.65m, which also includes a linear stone feature, was declared Locus 4. Opening photos and elevations were taken. NW: 26.63m AE 174E/61.05S NE: 26.64m AE 176E/61.05S SE: 26.66m AE 176E/62.70S SW: 26.68m AE 174E/62.70S Munsell: 10YR 3/2 very dark grayish brown In the north, formerly covered by Locus 2, the sterile degraded stone and soil mix was declared as Locus 5. It measured 2.00m x 1.75m minus a triangle in the northwest corner of dark brown to black compact clay soil with inclusions of bone and pottery. This soil was designated Locus 6 and measured 1.05m x 0.60m x 1.20m. Photos and elevations were taken of Locus 5 and Locus 6. Locus 5: NW: 26.55m AE 174.60E/58S NE: 26.55m AE 176E/58S SE: 26.51m AE 176E/59.75S SW: 26.55m AE 174E/59.75S Munsell: 2.5Y 7/3 pale yellow Locus 6: NW: 26.56m AE 174E/58S NE: 26.52m AE 174.60E/58S SE: N/A SW: 26.55m AE 174E/59.05S Munsell: 7.5YR 4/6 strong brown The soil in Locus 5 was loosened with a pick pass. It continues to consist of degraded stone without inclusions. It was picked up by hand and sorted into buckets. The soil in Locus 6 was hand-picked and scraped with trowels. It was very dense dark brown clay. There were inclusions of pottery and bone. Two large bones are present and showing but still go deeper into the soil. In Locus 3 the plaster layer was taken out with hand picks and preserved for flotation in canvas bags and wheelbarrows. Loose tile fragments were also removed and recorded by measured bowls. As the area was leveled another horizontally laying pan tile was uncovered. Diagnostic bone was recovered and recorded in Locus 5 revealing that the degraded stone layer is not entirely sterile. SF 46 Locus 5 175.62E/59.09S 26.53m AE Diagnostic bone SF 47 Locus 6 174.34E/58.12S 26.51m AE Diagnostic bone; 10 fragments PM: Scraping continued in Locus 3 to bring it down to the level of the horizontally lying tiles. The plaster soil layer continued to be saved for flotation. Scraping with hand picks also continued in Locus 5 and 6. In Locus 6 two more rocchetto fragments were uncovered and recorded as SF 48. They are likely associated with SF 44.
