Morning

Because many of thress in the Tesoro 23 area are large, it was necessary to use a chain saw to finish clearing the area.  Once the land was clear of tree and brush , the grid for Tesoro 23 was established.  An area of 8 meters (e/w) by 3 meters (n/s) was designated, using numerical coordinates of 0-7 (e/w) and alphabetical coordinates of A-C (n/s).

First, a cut of approximatley 15cm. in depth was made - this was done to clear the trench of its topsoil.  ABC/0-6 was completed this morning.  This first level consists of stony, dark brown soil.  It produced some tile fragments, most of which are very worn.  In addition, some pottery was excavated: a red-ware base, an impasto rim, and  a few other impasto sherds.  This

material was scattered throughout the area excavated.

Tile: 1 cassetta

Pottery: 5 sherds

Afternoon

Work began by continuing and completing the topsoil cut through the 8th meter (ABC/7).  Next, a second cut of approximately 25cm. win depth was started - making the new floor level approximately 40cm. in depth.  There was only time to complete on meter of this cut (ABC/7).  The soil continues to be dark brown at this depth.  The small stones have become less frequent; however, a few larger rocks did apppear (3 such rocks in ABC/7).  A small amount of tile and pottery was excavated - a few rims and other impasto sherds - still no bucchero.

Tile: 1/2 cassetta

Pottery: 1/4 box
