Upon re-examination I am still confident with southern surface L5027 and its abuttal with western wall L5008, and that wall's subsequent association NW-SE wall L5031, but there's very little pottery or other features to indicate it as a surface other than the very nice, flat-bottomed way the collapse came off the surface.
In any event, the early part of the day was to be spent doing a nice schematic drawing. However, a significant portion of the northerly western baulk collapsed sometime in the last 24-hours so the trench was rather messy. Thus, after cleaning (I had sent my workers away as I was just supposed to be drawing till breakfast) it took me until about 10:30 to finish the drawing. I also wanted to get a plan shot of the trench in case the baulk continues to be disagreeable (in which case we'll cut the higher, unstable portion of the baulk back and do some massive sandbagging). Because of light conditions the photo will have to wait until the afternoon. Hopefully there won't be any baulk collapse associated with that....

Purpose of shot:
There are two main features in the trench when this shot was taken, on in the north and one in the south. Both are similarly aligned mudbrick architecture with related floors. The was taken to record these and allow us to subsequently remove them.
Explanation of areas:
In the north, the important surface is L5034, which is bordered on the E by mudbrick wall L5039 and on the N by mudbrick wall L5037. Unfortunately, as the eastern portions of L5037, due to the slope, are near the topsoil, the wall was degraded so we can only assume L5037 and L5039 once met to form the NE corner of the surface.
Notably, pottery and small pebbles can be seen on the surface and in some accumulation against the eastern wall. Also of note is the ashy pit, L5047, a layer of which was found beneath the almost the entirety of L5037, L5034 and L5039.
L5033, L5036 and L5048 are pottery-lined circular pits or ovens, which are likely contemporary but associated with a higher surface that has been removed. L5028 is the remnant of an unclear, possibly surface level that may be the original source of the ovens. L5048 cuts into wall L5039.
L5021, L5020 and L5042 are areas of indeterminate fill, possibly topsoil as, due to the slope of the trench, they are all rather near surface level.
Finally, L5038 is a layer sand and silt which covered portions of the surface and was built up against the southern portions of wall L5039.
In the south, the primary surface is L5027, which is bounded by mudbrick walls L5008 and L5031 on the west and north respectively. The exact size and geometry of L5031 is unclear because many walls were built atop each other in different periods in that location.
At the very south of wall L5008, is abuts an oven, L5029, which is associated with a lower surface level. L5024, in the SE, was a large ash/soil pit which was probably sealed by surface L5027.
L5040 is a sounding cut into L5027.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
