Trench D6 Daily Journal     August 14, 2002

Baris only today!

~5cm of the surface of Locus 39 was removed as its relationships with the surrounding loci had been recorded and it was becoming damaged from exposure. The large upright rim set on a new surface (not yet defined) but much of the other pottery was found floating in the fill.

7cm of the area of L29 abutting the chamber walls of L24 and 25 (Southwest edge) was removed, revealing much slag and mudbrick (mixed sizes, 2 bags worth). This area is likely debri from the South wall of L20.

Work was continued in the rest of 29 ~4cm, clearing the debri and resulting in a flat area. After digging a slag group and blackened mudbrick was visible. Also visible were more large bright orange bricks, and we believe we are near the floor.

Next more debri from L26 was removed, revealing continuation of slag, in a similar fashion to the slag flow that wraps around from L24 to L25.

Removal of the debri from the East side of L6 revealed much more slag. Also revealed was that the wall of L5 continues with slag to the North!, but we were not able to include this on todays dayplan for lack of room. Curiouser and curiouser!

Debri removal in L14 revealed more slag on the inside of the North wall.

Finally L8 was pushed down ~20 cm, revealing continuation of the same very hard soil found above, and one large stone in the North.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
