T100 Conclusion T100 was opened in the 2022 season with the following goals: • To uncover the N-S profile of the stratigraphy north of O2/Workshop in the west • To compare said stratigraphy with the stratigraphy of T22 excavated west of it in 2019 • To determine the nature and function of the area north of O2/Workshop • To better understand the building techniques employed in O2/Workshop • To uncover details which will clarify the chronology of the O2/Workshop structures in relation to the EPOC structures Loci 1 and 3 revealed that the stratigraphy north of OC2/Workshop in the west evidences its destruction and collapse. Locus 1, the surface deposit in the southern two-thirds of the trench which had been exposed and left unexcavated in the 1980s, contained a variety of inclusions, most of which were either fragments of construction materials or vitrified elements and carbon indicating burning. Locus 3, located below Locus 1, contained exclusively plaster and tile collapse. Some of the tile fragments of Locus 3 were found laying flatly on a plaster and soil surface, which must have been the northern exterior surface contemporary with the OC2/Workshop occupation and use onto which its roof collapsed during destruction. Locus 12, natural bedrock which has also been augmented by human activity, was found just to the north of the collapse deposits. This locus showed that the bedrock is fairly close to the Orientalizing surface in elevation just northwest of OC2/Workshop. 4.25m into the trench measuring from the south, however, the bedrock drops off and on the north it is faced with large worked stones. On the north side, bound to Locus 12, Locus 5 documented a deposit of almost entirely sterile degraded stone. Yet, Locus 6—and later Locus 11 in the trench’s extension—documented an ovoid cut in this degraded stone (Locus 5). It is unclear at this time whether the cut is natural or anthropic. Further investigation is necessary to ascertain its overall dimensions as well as the nature of the inclusions within its deposits, which consisted of large amounts of bone and pottery in both Loci 6 and 11. The stratigraphy of bedrock augmented with a worked stone facing and a cut to its north in degraded stone matches exactly the stratigraphy uncovered in T22 in 2019 (EC XIV). When the trench was extended to further investigate the cut north of the augmented bedrock, a linear stone feature, Locus 8, was uncovered. This feature must have played a part in the use and function of the area north of the Workshop after its collapse, in the Archaic phase. The feature was found to extend 4m N-S within the trench and to have a width of 0.54m maximum. Its terminal points; however, were not within trench boundaries and thus not uncovered this season. The feature rested on Archaic leveling fill, Locus 10, on top of the cut to the north of the augmented bedrock facing (Locus 11), so part of it was removed after documentation to investigate the cut. In this investigation, it was seen that the curving line of the cut (Locus 6 and 11) appears to continue into the bedrock outcropping, and the worked facing stones are missing from it in this area. Additional excavation is needed to better understand the extent and function of the cut (Loci 6 and 11), the extent and function of the Archaic linear stone feature (Locus 8), the precise nature and function of the area north of OC2, and the chronological relationship of OC2 to the EPOC structures.
