Excavation of the first two metre cut (B-H, 9-10) of the extension of CA24 (B-H, 9-12) was completed.

Two and a half boxes of tiles were produced in this area. For a profile of this section of the trench see the facing page. ( drawing ) The excavation of this area showed that the section of plaster "pavement" continued in the grid squares B, 9 & 10 and also revealed two separate layers of productive strata- one of "blackearth" with tightly packed stones which produced for the most part only tiles and small pieces of pottery in only small numbers and another of brown earth with fewer stones but a greater concentration of tiles and also statue fragments and occassional pieces of frieze.

These two layers were contained in a sort of "ditch" in the galestra of this area. This "ditch" can also be seen in the profile shown on page Page 58 scan. Excavation also showed that the two layers may have been further separated by a line of exceptionally large stones (one of which is indicated on the profile as A) which lay immediately on, and sometimes sunken a little into, the galestra, on yellow earth, in the area.

With the completeion of this first two metre cut, excavation was begun on a second including the area B-H, 11-12.
