Notable events of the day--

1. Finding the distinctive ash layer sealing the southern dwelling related loci below the more northerly surface (L5066) in large segments, clearly separating the two surfaces. It's worth noting that this surface turned up 3 good bivalve shell pieces.

2. Finding a good, definitive surface (rather than the mostly arbitrary one we were working with) associated with the southern dwelling (loci not yet assigned), but rather than in the previously identified interior portion of the house, in the area W of N-S wall L5045. Not only did we find a bottom surface of extremely hard (think cement) packed dirt, but above it layers of plaster which once covered the surface. Though we hacked through a little of the plaster surface(s) before we clearly saw it (them), most of it is intact and awaiting excavation. The bad news is that we have to go down to dental-sized tools to follow the plaster as trowels are too coarse (plaster simply comes off) and hand picks are ineffective as, with the hard surface below, soil comes off in sections with that at the bottom, taking the plaster levels with it. Very little pottery was found above the surfaces, the highest of which are about 7 centimeters above where we've dug to in the other areas around the walls.

3. Finally finding the long suspected westward continuation of the E-W portion of wall L5045, which makes #2 an interior area definitively and makes the house that much cooler.

4. Finding what at the moment appears to be another hearth along the outside portion of #3 with larger stones, possibly organized, and all the ash to go along. Locus designation pending.

Things we need and/or want to do tomorrow--

A. Continue following the plaster surface mentioned in #2.

B. Look into a faintly-visible plaster lined wall, possibly cut by a faint pit, the former associated with surface L5066.

C. Take areas of L5066 which are fully documented and ready to be removed down to the level of the southern mudbrick house.

D. Make a small sounding in the eastern room of the house where the two walls meet to try and find i) surfaces; and ii) how deeply the walls are founded

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
